A few questions – interview with doom metal band from Italy - SUUM.

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.? 

Mark Wolf: Ciao! The band was founded in 2017 , it all started during a Pentagram show in Rome. All members in the band are Doom maniacs from many years, so we decided to found it, Suum are : Rick – Drums, Painkiller – Guitars, Marcas – Bass, Mark Wolf – vocals.

Suum were born with the intention to play Doom Metal, Doom for the Doomed, nothing else.


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering?

Mark Wolf: Buried Into The Grave has been recorder at Devil's Mark studio, in Rome, the recording sessions were very fast (two days), we wanted to get a sound very close to what we are in our live shows. 

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)?

Mark Wolf: Endless Winter released 300 copies , Hellas Records 100 tapes.

Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with? 

Mark Wolf: With the use of the metaphors we describe the horror that surrounds us every day. The Lyrics also deal with themes close to occultism and mysticism.

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important? 

Mark Wolf: Logo was created by Painkiller, our riffman, the graphics too. Website was created by me. We think social networks are important but not fundamental, they must be used in the right way, the most important thing must be the music and the message you want to spread.

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you?

Mark Wolf: Endless Winter for the cd version, Hellas Records for the tape version.

We decided to collaborate with them because they are serious people who do their job with passion, this is a very important thing for us.

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration?

Mark Wolf: Well, we pay tribute to all great Doom masters, we are not innovators, we don't invent anything, we want to play only Doom metal with the right attitude.

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response?

Mark Wolf: We sent the promo only to Endless Winter and Hellas Records, they were immediately interested and enthusiastic, so we decided to sign, all very fast and unexspected.

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best? 

Mark Wolf: We were born a few months ago but we immediately got live gigs, we played at Stoner Night in Rome, Doom Over Florence II edition in Tuscany, Doom's day Survivors fest in Milan and we are closing other agreements in these days. 

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band?

Mark Wolf: What we want is to play a lot and everywhere, we do not want to get success or something like that , in my opinion Doom needs to stay in the depths of the rock/metal scene .

 Zmítáš se v posmrtné křeči, zničený a ponížený. Pomalu přecházíš na druhou stranu. Ve smrti je každý sám. Podáváš ruku nemrtvým, opouštíš své nebohé tělo. Kymácí se loďka na řece Styx, jsi vyděšený. Mnoho otázek zůstává nezodpovězených. Jedno ale víme jistě. Až tě uloží do rakve, budou k tomu hrát prašiví death metalisté ABYTHIC. 

 Smrt má mnoho podob a tu, kterou nám předkládají němečtí maniaci, si dám do žil vždy s chutí. Mrtvolný zápach rozkládajících se těl. Atmosféra beznaděje, hluk praskajících kostí. Vítejte v temných katakombách záhrobí. "Beneath Ancient Portals" je jako ozvěna z těch nejvzdálenějších chodeb podzemí. Krutá, ošklivá, špinavá a mrazivá jako dotek zla.



"Beneath Ancient Portals" je vynikající poctou poctivému death metalu. Kapela je ovlivněna smečkami jako BOLT THROWER, ASPHYX, GRAVE, PENTACLE. Skladby v jejich podání jsou až hypnoticky přitažlivé, magicky zlé a temné. ABYTHIC letos vydali album, u kterého ožívají ty nejošklivější noční můry. Potkali jste někdy Smrt? Podali jste ji ruku a zatančili si s ní zběsilý tanec na svém vlastním hrobě? Pokud ne, tak s novinkou těchto Němců máte možnost. Budete spáleni pravým, nefalšovaným death metalem, zmrazeni doomovými náladami čerstvých hrobů, abyste nakonec prokleti poklekli a poklonili se věčnosti. Přiznávám, byl jsem deskou "Beneath Ancient Portals" zcela uhranut. Připadám si, jako bych propadl peklu. Vynikající death metal ve starém stylu, který exhumuje vaše tělo i mysl! Prašivina!

You are tossing in post-mortem convulsions, destroyed and humiliated. You are slowly moving to the other side. While dying everybody is alone. Their songs are hypnotically attractive, magically evil and dark. This year ABYTHIC released an album that brings to life the ugliest nightmares. Have you ever met Death? Have you shake hands and dance with her the frantic dance on your own grave? If not, you have a chance to do that with the new album by those Germans. You will be burned with the true, honest death metal, you will be frozen with doom moods of fresh graves to be cursed in the end and knee down to eternity. I have to admit that I was delighted by the album “Beneath Ancient Portals”. I feel like being in hell. Excellent death metal in the old style which will exhume your mind and body! Ashy thing!

Ave, can you introduce your band to our readers? – When was it founded and what style of music do you play , etc.? 

AVE! We are Abythic from Germany and play Old School DEATH METAL with some Doom elements! The band was founded in 2015 by M.D.B. In the same year we released our debut MCD "A FULL NEGATION OF EXISTENCE" through a small Label called Metal Inquisition. It was released as CD and LP. 


Where and under what conditions were you recording the new album? Who was in charge of sound, production and mastering? 

The new album was recorded in 2 different studios. The drums were recorded again, as well as on the MCD, at the CKB Studio in Essen / Germany. The other instruments, as well as the vocals were recorded in the Flashback Recordings Studio (Herne/Germany) under the direction of Tim (Suffocate Bastard). We are more than happy with his work. He himself is an absolute metal maniac and knows how to create a dark and brutal sound which fits to our ideas. The whole album was then mixed and mastered by Patrick Engel at the Temple of Disharmony. The cooperation was really pleasant and we are more than satisfied with the final result. 

How many copies were released and which medium was used for this new edition (CD, digital, vinyl, cassette)? 

"Beneath Ancient Portals" will be released as CD, LP, MC and Digital Download. There will be 1000 cds, 500 lps and 100 mcs. 


Who is the author of the lyrics and how were they created and about what do the lyrics deal with? 

Leimy, the singer, is responsible for the lyrics. At first we are searching for good song-titles and after that he creates lyrics around them. He isn't a big fan of esoteric or satanic stuff, so he creates little horror-stories which are inspired by films and books in the old school way. Let's comment the songs on "Beneath Ancient Portals“:

-PURULENT PHANTASM: It's about a man with hallucinations. Everyone around him seems to rot away and he realizes that he is becoming insane. He can't take it anymore and kills himself.

-ABANDONED TOMBS ON UNGODLY GROUNDS: Under an old temple the dead came back to life to feast upon the living. It has a direct reference to the next song which is called...

-BENEATH ANCIENT PORTALS: It is inspired by the babylonian mythos of Nergal's descent to the underworld and describes his journey to the shadows and realm of death.

-REDEMPTION THROUGH SOUL TRANSFUSION: A man suffers from a terminal illness and plans to transfer his soul to another body. But something goes terribly wrong and his soul is lost in the netherworld.

-AFTERWARDS BEHIND BEYOND: A man wishes for death and salvation and realizes that the church has lied to him his whole life and nothing but total darkness will await him in the afterworld. A very nihilistic song ;)

-DEPTHS OF OBLIVION: It's a very figurative description about the terrific horror of a mass-grave. Death Metal to the bone ;) 

Who created the logo of the band, and who took care of the graphics and the website? What about you and social networks? Do you consider these things important? 

The current logo, which was also used for the new album was drawn by Drummer and Songwriter M.D.B.. Our former guitarist D.B. then digitalized and adapted it. The cover was drawn by none other than the legendary artist Axel Hermann, who should already be known for his cult covers for bands like Morgoth, Asphyx, Bloodbath etc pp. The layout was made by Birger Schwidrop (Harvest of Eyes). He has also created layouts for numerous bands such as Venenum. 

Of course we also use social networks. We are not constantly doing any posts on it right now. Use it only to publish reviews or news on our part. Other bands are constantly posting stuff, which is very annoying. We are more likely to use it as a tool to give important information about the band and not for being a self-exposer. As far as promotion etc pp is concerned, everything is done by our label. 

Which label did you choose for releasing your album and why this label? Are you satisfied by how your label represents you and takés care about you? 

We chose the Swedish label Blood Harvest Records. That was relatively fast. We received a response very quickly and were able to quickly agree on the framework conditions for the contract. We are very satisfied so far. The label makes good publicity for the band. The communication is also absolutely ok. Blood harvest records enjoy a good reputation in the scene. We also consume quite a lot of bands from the Blood Harvest Records program. Therefore, we are very proud to work with a label whose bands we also like and respect. 

Which bands do you idolise and where do you get your inspiration? 

Well, there are many bands that inspire us. But certainly it is clearly the bands from the early 90s to mid-nineties. We are often associated with elements from bands like Grave, Asphyx and Bolt Thrower. You are certainly not completely wrong with this. But nevertheless we have developed our very own and individual style, which is very important to us. 

Did you send your record to some Labels - which are the labels? How was the response? 

Of course we applied to other labels. But they were all too slow, hahahahaha. We did not have much patience to wait that long cause we just wanted to publish the album quickly. The reactions from the other labels were mixed. 

How many gigs have you played? Which type of gigs do you prefer, whether it's (clubs or festivals) and which of your performances would you consider as the best? 

Abythic have played a total of 3 concerts so far. That's because we play exclusively with selected bands. We have to like and hear these bands ourselves, or at least know them. We've had the pleasure to share stage with bands like: Sadistic Intent, Blood Incantation, Cruciamentum, Phrenelith, Undergang ... to name a few. We are not interested in playing trivial concerts on every street corner with even more irrelevant bands. Therefore we rarely play live. These shows are also something special for us. Next year we play a show with great bands like: Dead Congregation, Fleshcrawl, Krypts .... 

What about your plans for the future? What do you want to achieve with the band? 

In may our first album will be released. But we are already working on new songs. Enough song material already exists. We will see what the future will bring. But we do not want to be rock stars ;)

Příběh sto čtyřicátý - Ukážeš mi svý rozervaný srdce, básníku?

Chodil jsem každé ráno brzy do práce, zařadil se do davu pochodujících dělníků. Dodnes vídávám jejich tváře se zasněnými a sedřenými obličeji. V časných hodinách není nálada na krásu, spíš se nadává, pokašlává, kouří se Startky bez filtru a plive se všude kolem. "Zasraná práce, zkurvenej život": zazní snad pokaždé. Smradlavá šatna, čpící včerejší alkohol a dřina, nekonečná dřina. Dřív jsme budovali socialismus, teď kapitalismus. Máme jen nový hesla, nástěnky a šéfové mají jinou barvu kravat. Jsou podlejší, usměvavější navenek. Už aby byl pátek a mohli jsme všechno hodit za hlavu, zapomenout, opít se a pořádně si zašukat dokud to jde.

Továrna mě pomalu schlamstla, rozmělnila, přetvořila si k obrazu svému. S ní jsem vstával, v ní jsem mžoural v umělém světle a nevěděl, jestli je ještě den nebo už noc. Vysávala mě, ponižovala mého ducha. Zbylo jen tělo - automat, který činil příkazy. A protože všechno musí být v rovnováze, princip jing a jang musí fungovat, začal jsem zase psát - jako relax, odvetu za všechen stereotyp. Potají, polehounku a byl alergický a nevrlý při otázkách: "Co si to tam zase píšeš?" Odpovídal jsem že nic, že si jen tak čmárám a byl naštvaný, protože mi přerušili nit.

Koupil jsem si sešit bez linek, protože jsem chtěl být za rebela a naschvál nedodržovat úpravu. Těch pravidel, nařízení, ochranných přileb, řádu, bylo všude v továrně moc. A budu naschvál psát fixkou Centropenem. Černým jako metal. Jako moje hudba, kterou si rvu pod tlakem pořád do uší. "Pojď na pivo, hele, večer je fotbal...mám tady nějaký nový porno...": se pomalu měnilo na: "on je fakt nějakej divnej, pořád jen ty sluchátka, divně kouká, furt si něco píše." Hm, byl jsem asi jinej. Často jsem se přistihl, že lítám někde v oblacích. 

Jdu si třeba takhle za Janou, že pokecáme. Sraz je v pět. A mě zaujmou tři mladý holky na trávníku, jak skáčou gumu (bez podprsenek). Naproti nim tři klučinové. Dorazím pro svoji kamarádku v šest, protože sedím se sešitem v ruce a spřádám báseň o několika slokách. Vytvářím příběh, vizi, jak se dají dohromady, kdo koho bude mít rád, kdo nenávidět, kolik budou mít dětí a kdy zemřou. Do toho odříkávají děvčata nějakou říkanku a já jsem mimo. "Asi máš poruchu, vole": řekl mi na to Prcalík a Jana byla naštvaná, protože kvůli mě čekala tak dlouho.

Těžko říct, sebe samotného by člověk neměl posuzovat, ale vím, že jediný člověk, kterému jsem své básně četl, byla Káča. Jen v kalhotkách si zalezla do postele, dost často v mém půjčeném svetru, aby prý mohla čichat, nasáknout mnou. A já se hrozně styděl, protože číst něco, co je vaší samotnou součástí, je hrozně těžké. Básně o jaru, o továrně, o ranním svítání mezi panely, sloky vznešených i sprostých slov. "Víš Smrťáku, ty seš stejně zvláštní kluk. Někdy se chováš jak nevychovaný hovádko, ale když tě poslouchám, tak chvílemi brečím, směju se, přemýšlím a spoustu tvých slov a úsloví si pamatuju": řekla mi a byla hned a ráda poddajná. Hladil jsem ji dlouze po páteři, od krku až dolů - stejně jsem nevěděl co říct, dotyky prozradí nakonec vždycky víc. Pak už si dovedete představit, co následovalo.

Pořád mě přemlouvala, že je hrozná škoda, abych si nechával všechno pro sebe. Lidi by měli slyšet a číst, co chceš říct. Blbost, odpovídal jsem, nikoho nebudou zajímat básně mladýho metalovýho váguse. Ale budou, budou...spolčila se s Janou a přemluvila i další kobry, jak jsme tenkrát holkám často říkali.

Vzal jsem tedy jednu jedinou báseň o ranní cestě do práce a přečetl ji na panelech. Byla o bolesti, o stereotypu, o slunci, které za chvilku neuvidíte, o chladných strojích a neskutečné síle lidí, kteří tohle všechno vydrží. Četl jsem ji až někdy kolem půlnoci, v naději, že všichni budou už tak opilí, že mě nebudou poslouchat. Mýlil jsem se. Napnutí a vnímaví byli všichni. "Ukaž mi svý rozervaný srdce, básníku!": zakřičel na mě po chvíli ticha jeden kluk. Bylo mu dvacet let a už několik roků dělal na soustruhu. Prý jsem se přesně trefil i do jeho pocitů.

Navnaděn úspěchem, opilý pivem a radostí, jsem začal z patra i z paměti, citovat nějaké své další básně, určené holkám. Byly o dlouhých vlasech, o chůzi, o smíchu, hebkých rukou a objetích. O tom, že jsme tady, my vožralý držky a neurvalá holota, hlavně pro ně. Byl jsem asi tenkrát jako mladý smrádě ještě moc patetický, ale možná o to víc bylo vše krásnější, upřímnější a vznešenější. Ještě jsem nebyl tolik semlet životem. Byl jsem moc rád, že jsem všem ztraceným duším mohl alespoň na chvilku přinést trošku světla. Vždyť většina z nás měla doma nic moc životy. Při nejlepším šedivé. 

Káča byla na mě hrdá a hrozně ji těšilo, že mě přemluvila. Jen jsem musel slíbit, že ty básně pro ní nikdy nikomu v životě nebudu číst. Slíbil jsem a slib porušil jen jednou. O tom ale až za pár let, až se dostaneme v příbězích do Plzně.

Poznal jsem tenkrát sílu slova, rytmus vět. Byl jsem opravdu asi hlavně rozervanej básník, který vyrostl mezi panelem a asfaltem. Mé básně byly z dnešního pohledu nedokonalé, ale měly v sobě kouzlo bezprostřednosti a vášně. A na rovinu, psát je mají přece hlavně mladí lidé, protože ještě nejsou ohlodáni a unaveni. Také chtějí ještě měnit, budovat, přemýšlet. Mají v sobě jiskru a naději. A taky spoustu lásky a chvění. Jo hergot, je to tak. 

"Chci, abychom si zalezli pod peřinu a ještě si mi četl, prosím": řekla a já musel. I když mi šlo hlavně o to, být zase v ní, splynout, aby se mi zcela poddala. Přečetl jsem jen dva odstavce a fungovalo to. Podlehla a já jí ukázal svý rozervaný srdce.

Vize je taková, že každou neděli vyjde jeden příběh (pokud mi do toho tedy něco nevleze). Všechny pak budou postupně doplňovány zde (pravý sloupec na stránkách):
